From the Author's Desk: Preface to Three on a Match

January, 2022

“Three on a match.”

I knew how this mystery was going to end even before I knew how it was going to start. The light surrounding the first victim illuminates the next ones and then consequently shows the killer. Through multiple perspectives, readers can try to deduce the ending or just come along for the ride.

I started writing this book during spring finals week of my first year in my Doctorate of Audiology program, right after the COVID-19 pandemic began. I had read every Agatha Christie book and watched all the episodes of Murder, She Wrote—I wanted a new puzzle.

After days in clinic, I would sit on my porch in my mint-green Adirondack chair, typing away under Iowa stars, until I’d realize with a start that it was past midnight. I am not a patient person by nature, but the quiet joy I experienced while writing this story makes me think that I must have learned something about patience just in time to turn 25.

This book is best enjoyed with a strong cup of coffee, a cozy couch, and a sleeping dog nearby, much in the same way it was written.
